Ratio and Proportion

Ratio

A ratio is a way of comparing two or more quantities. It tells us how much of one thing there is compared to another. Ratios can be written in several ways, but the most common are as fractions a/b, with a colon a:b, or with the word "to" a to b.

Proportion

A proportion is an equation that states two ratios are equal. It's a way of saying that the ratio of one pair of quantities is the same as the ratio of another pair.

For example, the proportion 1/2 = 2/4 states that the ratio 1:2 is the same as the ratio 2:4. This is true because both ratios simplify to 1:2.

  1. Equality of Cross Products: In a proportion a/b = c/d, the cross products are equal, meaning a * d = b * c.
